"The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a teacher-completed checklist that assesses children’s readiness to learn at school in five domains or areas: (1) physical health and well-being, (2) social competence, (3) emotional maturity, (4) language and cognitive development, and (5) communication skills & general knowledge. In Manitoba, the EDI is completed by Kindergarten teachers every two years." The EDI is reported as a percentage of children that fall into each category within a geographic area.
Each of the five domains are represented by two corresponding graphs below: one showing the percentage of children that are very ready to learn according to the criteria, and the other showing the percentage of children that are not ready to learn. In addition to the five domains, there are two graphs that give a broad snapshot of readiness to learn. The first shows the percentage of children that are very ready according to one or more of the criteria. The second shows the percentage of children that are not ready according to one or more of the criteria. |
